Kathmandu, Nepal - September 2025
Nepal experienced major political unrest during the Gen Z-led movement in September 2025, with young protesters raising concerns about corruption, governance and restrictions affecting social media.
The political crisis that followed resulted in a major change in the country's political leadership and the formation of an interim government.
For families with established political affiliations, the political upheaval also created concerns about personal safety.
One such family is that of Jhupa Chand Thakuri, a long-time member of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) who has been politically active since approximately January 2002 and has served as a Ward Member.
According to his son, Surendra Kumar Chand, his father's political background became a source of hostility and threats following the political changes.
Chand says that threats were communicated through social media and directly, with members of the family being told to leave their home and facing threats of serious harm.
The family also reports several serious incidents during this period, including a vehicle being burned in Kathmandu and an attack involving a petrol bomb at their family home in Bardiya.
The family says it has retained news reports, photographs, videos, police documents and other evidence relating to the incidents.
The family believes that the continuing political tension and threats have created significant concerns regarding their safety.
